BAnana Fibers

Background

Banana Fibres are so called hard fibres, extracted from the pseudo stem of monocots.

Length is up to 150 cm.

characteristics

Fibers were analysed at Saxoninan Textile Research Institut (STFI). Result showed, that mechanical properties are in-between Sisal and Abaca fibers.

Structure

REM imaging showed, that Banana fibers are consolidated in bundels.

The diameter of the bundel shown on the right image is approximately 100 µm.

Using a two times higher resolution, we noticed, that the hollow fibers  have diametes of up to 15 µm and show distinct lumina.
